It’s Over
Run for your lives, it appears the end truly is at hand, Jason Kendall has hit a homerun, his first in his last one billion at-bats (961 actual ab’s). Run people, run.

Yes citizens of Curveballcity, the end of the world is nigh. This is evidenced by two seperate events that occurred over the long holiday weekend. First, the other contributing writer to Curveballcity who shall remain nameless for his own protection, got married this weekend thus leading to a lull in our coverage. That is not the first sign of the Apocalypse, but merely the precursor to the event indicative of the end of the world. This anonymous contributor sat with his new wife the day after the marriage and opened up wedding gifts with both of their families present. Then it happened, a sickening scene whose true signifance would not become known until the following night. Mr. Anonymous opened a card from a well-wisher containing a giftcard to Bed, Bath and Beyond. Sean, sorry, Mr. Anonymous then uttered the following phrase, “Oooh, a giftcard to Bed, Bath and Beyond.” I scanned his face for an indication of his trademark sarcasm, or hopefully temporary insanity, but rather what I saw was even worse, he truly was excited about the gift card.Â
Now citizens, it is expected, even gaurenteed, that one’s man card will lose a few corners from the wife’s scissors, but to lose the card entirely is unacceptable. One may be grateful for all the gifts given, happy that those who love them have remembered them with kindness shown by a gift, but to wooo with glee over a gift card to BB&B??? This is not the brother I knew.Â
Now alone, this would not necessarily cause me to pack my 3 day emergency kit, but combined with the news I received upon our flights arrival late last night, I realized it was the beginning of the end. As soon as we landed, and resumed contact with the outside world through the power of the cellphone internet, we learned that the A’s had sunk so far to lose to the Kansas City Royals in Oakland. This is a team that literally had 3 seperate articles that I have seen over the weekend stating that quite possibly could be the worst team ever, drawing comparisons to the ‘62 Mets. In fact, last night was only their 4th road victory of the season. How can the A’s have sunk so far? Only one solution exists, the world is ending, the sky is falling, the end is near.Â
Men are losing their entire man card, the A’s are losing to the Royals at home. If Noah were here, the ark would be in rapid production. Then again, the day after the marriage, and May in a baseball season might be a little too soon to judge the actual seriousness of the situation. Either way, I have my 3 day pack with me at all times.Š
Last night hurt. It was truly painful. Up 4-0, Frank Thomas having a storybook return and hitting like he never left, and Zito rolling. It was a great game. Street came in and I thought it was over. I mean why wouldn’t I? Street has been as consistent as it gets. And yet, some no-name pinchhitter comes in and does what Barry Bonds and others have not been able to do lately, he got to Street, and the A’s lost a heartbreaker.Â
It hurts. And yet I look at the A’s D.L. list and wonder if we haven’t been lucky to not lose several other late games because of injuries to the pitching staff. Kennedy, Duke, and Witasik, all on the D.L. Those are our top set up men. All down. Then the top long relievers Saarloos and Halsey are forced into the rotation to cover for Harden and Loiaza. Now we have guys like Karsay, Flores, and Keisler trying to shut the door. Not quite the same force as the prior three. The A’s are still at .500 and for that we can be grateful. The hitting has been coming around lately, fingers crossed for Thomas catching fire after visiting his old haunts in Chicago. Hurry up Harden, we need your help.Â
I say to you Giants fans, go ahead and enjoy the moment. Really, I mean it. I can understand how fans of a team like the Giants need these little victories to keep their strength up. When your franchise has not won a World Series since 1954, and never has won one in San Francisco, games in May mean a lot to the fans. I will take the 20 playoff appearances and 4 World Championships in Oakland alone anyday over 2 games in May, but hey, that’s just me. Enjoy Giants fans, Enjoy.
The A’s just finished sweeping the Mariners, sure not the team that will stop the presses, but still, winning the games they are supposed to win is the first step in the right direction The offense seems to be stepping up and that is sure nice to see. Melhouse is looking to gain even more playing time by smashing the ball every time he gets an opportunity. I will be there tomorrow and I am extremely sickened to say that I hope I get to see Bonds hit 714, although I hope the A’s win 10-1. I am sorry, but being a part of history is worth watching Steroid Barry hit one. Just know that a big part of me will feel ill, the other will be happy to be able to say I was there. Â
