Blessing in Disguise

Am I the only one who feels the injury to Dan Johnson could be a blessing in disguise?  Travis Buck and Daric Barton in action during Spring Training displayed the great talents they are.  One idea being thrown around is to put Swisher back at 1st where his defense is truly valuable and to bring up Buck to play right field.  I love this idea!  Buck really impressed me during the spring and I feel like he could give the A’s a boost with his offensive production.  Even if the A’s go with Durazo instead, I don’t feel like there is much of a drop-off from Johnson.  The only problem I see is that Johnson does not have the chance to showcase himself as I was hoping we could trade him for a prospect as Barton will be our starting first baseman/dh next season at the latest.  He is a true difference maker.

We need some wins-er

Two questions for y’all:

#1 Did you ever think you’d be clamoring so hard for Jason Windsor to get a starting spot?

#2 (and more importantly) Did you think you’d be doing so this soon?

Holy Crap Moment

I looked at our bracket challenge to see that Tammy is in the 100th percentile of all ESPN’s bracket entries. I looked at her bracket to see what was going on and she literally picked the only two big upsets so far, VCU over Duke and Winthrop over Notre Dame. The only pick she has missed was BYU over Xavier, and as an alumni of BYU, who can blame her. How many hours of college basketball has she watched over the season, maybe 3 BYU games. This solidifies my theory that knowledge is only a detriment when picking the brackets.

NCAA BRACKET CHALLENGE

Curveballcity has set up a group to enter brackets on espn.com. It is completely free and just for fun. Although you have the option of having 5 bracket entries, please keep it to 2 only, we want your picks to mean something, anyone can get a few upsets right if you have a ton of entries. The group is called curveballcity, the password is chavez. Enjoy.

Curveballcity makes the SF Chronicle

The following is in an article by Susan Slusser. It is a follow up to an article two days earlier. Members of Curveballcity are the fans who yelled out throw the sizzler. Actually, we were the only ones, so we know it was us. Today when Flores pitched, we yelled, “tira el sizzleo.” We are hoping to make a repeat performance tomorrow in the chronicle:

Hot topic: Jay Witasick’s does-he-or-doesn’t-he “Sizzler” pitch is still all the buzz in the A’s clubhouse — especially after a group of fans yelled “Throw the Sizzler!” at Witasick when he was on the mound in the ninth. Witasick said he had to put his head down and step off in order to avoid laughing.

Does it exist? Well, Witasick pitched a perfect inning, struck out two and got the save.

“Did he break ‘The Sizzler’ out?” Geren asked. “I’ve got to find out.”

Good luck. Many think it’s all in jest. Dan Johnson insists the pitch is real. Witasick feigns ignorance, and the rest of the pitching staff is enormously tickled.

“I threw a couple ‘Sizzlers’ yesterday,” Thursday’s starter, Brad Halsey, informed a reporter, grinning. “Actually, they weren’t really ‘Sizzlers.’ They were ‘Sizzlettes.’ ”

“I throw one, too,” lefty reliever Ron Flores chimed in. ” ‘El Sizzleo.’ ”

Starter Rich Harden wandered by and said, “I’ve got to get Jay to teach it to me. I don’t know if he will, though.”

Said Witasick, “I don’t know what he’s talking about. What pitch?”
